More prosaically this piece combines a plethora of complex techniques, many unique to Sax Berlin. His invention of oil overlaid with crushed marble forms the ground overlaid with the Medieval tempera technique also using hand ground original pigments. The portraits of the Muses were created using 6 different techniques in layers. The piece is finished with matte varnish. "It’s taken me almost 9 years to fully realise this piece. The number of times I have pondered this piece! I love the combination of the violet and the terracotta pink with the natural crushed marble". After so many years this beautiful, complex painting is complete and ready to take its place in the art world.
