Hitting the streets of downtown Manhattan in the late 1970's the SAMO tag was the mark of artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Al Diaz & Shannon Dawson. This short lived collaboration saw satirical social commentary appear as graffiti on walls, shutters, subway carriages & many other convenient "canvasses". Working on the Manhattan streets at the same time was Sax Berlin, his path crossing that of the furious, anarchical groups of street artisits. Their influence on Berlin's Neo-expressionism genre is unmistakeable. Today we again face the loss of our rights & freedoms and Neo-expressionism seeks to make social comment powerful again. In SAMO - Free Speech, Berlin echoes the cries of politically aware concerned people the world over.
